It’s not the deepest game mode, but the real meat here is in the story and the scenery, which Mafia: Definitive Edition thankfully nails pretty well. Collectibles can be found and new cars can be unlocked. Players will be free to ride around the stunning locales, or take on a few simple missions. The new Free Ride combines both these modes in an effort to streamline the choice. Back in 2002, players could choose between Free Ride, where the only thing to really do was ride around and take in the scenery, and Free Ride Extreme, which featured a series of tasks and challenges. Unlike the original, there is only a single Free Ride mode in Mafia: Definitive Edition. One can simply exit to the main menu, select Free Ride, and ride around Lost Heaven to their trench coat-clad heart’s content. Simply select Story mode and complete the first chapter, “An Offer You Can’t Refuse.” After doing so, the main menu will allow players to select Free Ride mode. It will initially be grayed out and inaccessible, but it’s actually extremely simple to unlock the mode. How to unlock Free Ride in Mafia: Definitive EditionĪfter booting up the game for the first time, players will find the option for Free Ride mode in the main menu. It isn’t exactly designed for really robust open-world gameplay, but this is a game released in the year 2020-of course, there’s an open world! Well, kind of. Unlike that behemoth, Mafia: Definitive Edition tells a tight and compelling prohibition-era drama with beautiful 1930’s environments. It’s a loving remake and a wonderful excursion (much more so than some of the other remasters of the Mafia series) for fans of the series looking to reminisce or for new players looking for a take on the crime genre that's less goofy than Grand Theft Auto V. One could say it hits the mark with the precision of a Tommy gun-that is, not exactly but pretty close. Related: Mafia: Definitive Edition - A Mob Classic Returns That’s certainly what Mafia: Definitive Edition, the remake of the classic action-adventure gangster game from 2002, is aiming for. Nevertheless, the genre is still capable of resonating with audiences and can certainly engender waves of nostalgia for some. By today’s standards, the gangster genre is practically quaint-if only bad guys could still be identified by their pin-striped suits. Mafia stories were once capable of stirring ire and controversy.
